Sexual revolutionaries complain that America has always been a patriarchy, while some of their political opponents insist that it is actually men who now need special protections. But our political tradition suggests both are wrong: America's ideals were always a challenge to patriarchal norms and institutions, and over time Americans have acted on those ideals in ways we should better understand.
