AS PARTICIPANTS in the National Research Council’s Committee on the Status of Black Americans, we appreciate the opportunity to respond to Richard Herrnsteins review essay on our report A Common Destiny: Blacks and American Society [”Still an American Dilemma,” Winter 1990]. Knowing his wide knowledge, scholarly commitment, and expository skill, we are not surprised to find it an interesting exercise; it is not, however, a persuasive one.
