It is a rare opportunity to be able to read two important books, published almost simultaneously, about New York City. One– Joseph Lyford’s The Airtight Cage (Harper & Row)– is highly provocative and already extremely influential. The other– Roger Starr’s The Living End: The City and its Critics– is merely excellent, and has therefore received much less attention.
