Recently, in the face of men who believed that X should not be promoted because of his strongly held and activist political position, I argued in abstracto the injustice of my voting against the tenuring or promotion of Y simply because he carried on chemical and biological warfare research, provided that his research was good, that he was a fine teacher, and that the university supported in principle work on CBW. On the other hand, I would have no compunctions about bombing Y’s CBW lab as long as no one got hurt.
